One of four principal Sounds which make up the Marlborough Sounds, Queen Charlotte is the main thoroughfare for the Interisland ferries which provide passenger, car and rail transport to Wellington. The Marlborough Sounds are renowned for outdoor activities; fishing, hiking, kayaking and cycling which are popular with visitors and locals.

There are several walking tracks in the region; Queen Charlotte is the principal one comprising 71km of unique bush and beach hiking.

For the wine lovers there are over 65 wineries in the region offering tastings and fabulous food. You can also participate in The Marlborough Wine and Food Festival in February.

Enjoy the panoramic views of the countryside traveling by train or car from Christchurch to Picton. From Wellington city it is a three hour ferry ride or there is a commuter air service.

Special events in Picton and its surrounds include the Marlborough Walk, Foreshore and Maritime Festivals, fishing competitions, the Marlborough Wine and Food Festival , cruise ship visits, Pelorus Jack Harbour jetboat racing, yacht races and rowing regattas. So there is always plenty of things happening in the area.
